Shooting is one of India’s most successful Olympic sports — and getting started is far easier than most people think. You don’t need a licence, you don’t need to buy a gun, and you can begin as a complete beginner. Here’s exactly how.
1. Understand the sport
Most beginners start with 10m air rifle or 10m air pistol — the Olympic events, fired indoors at a 10-metre target with a 4.5mm air weapon. These are precision sports built on focus, stability and technique.
2. Do you need a licence? (No)
10m air rifle and air pistol do not require a firearm licence in India. You can train and compete without one. A good academy provides the weapon during your early training.
3. Choose an affiliated academy
To compete officially, train at an academy affiliated to your state association (e.g. KSRA in Karnataka), which is affiliated to the NRAI. Affiliation makes you eligible for state and national championships. Learn about affiliations →
4. Take a beginner course
